The Craziest Prom Proposal You’ll Ever See

September 21, 2012

Would you travel across the globe and climb into a volcano to ask your date to prom?

Well, when I was in Sicily a few years ago it appeared that someone did just that. Now I can’t be sure, but I don’t think they have prom on the tiny Aeolian island of Vulcano, just off the coast of Sicily. Furthermore, I’m betting if they did the students wouldn’t be asking their date to prom in slang-y English.

And yet, I spotted this inside Gran Cratere volcanic crater on Vulcano:

To give a sense of what it would be like to climb into this active volcano to write this message, here’s the full image:

In fact, the message can barely be seen for all the smoke coming out of the crater, so who knows if the invitee even got to see her message! The climb up to the crater isn’t terribly hard, but it’s not walk in the park, and the smoke and the smell of sulfur makes it difficult to breathe once you arrive. Here’s a few more photos, just to give you an idea.

For a sense of scale, in the above photo you can see a tiny person down on the lower right part edge of the crater.

While exploring the volcano is a cool experience (that makes you wonder if you’ve just shaved a few years off your life, especially if you dare to climb down into the crater), I’m not sure it’s the most romantic setting. I wonder if she said yes?

I just wonder if she said yes before he died of sulphur poisoning?

Wow, I’d definitely be interested to know her response too!

Haha I hope she said yes after all that!

And my friends and I thought we were so cool for writing “Prom?” in fire in the Sears parking lot…:p
