Follow us along our Epic Aussie Road Trip, a series that takes us on a long drive across the bottom of Australia from Sydney to Perth (along with two side trips up to the Outback and the Far North). Also read up on my Tips for Taking an Australian Road Trip and Eating Out in Australia, and check out my video of driving across Australia in two minutes.
Follow us as we leave our home for the past six months and begin our journey to Melbourne. We wander gorgeous beaches, encounter some friendly kangaroos in a lovely place, and camp next to a picturesque lake for a gorgeous sunset.
The Sydney vs. Melbourne rivalry explored. We take in St. Kilda, wander the city, and gorge ourselves at the delectable Queen Victoria Markets.
A three-day adventure like none other, fending for ourselves in the Outback, sleeping in swags under the stars (and rain?!), and taking in the magnificent sites of Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon.
We journey to Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation, where we enjoy gorgeous isolated beaches straight out of a LOST episode. We spot crocs, giant lizards and other creatures, lounge in the sun, and have a try at diving at the Great Barrier Reef.
A cruise along Australia’s most famous bit of road with fantastic scenery. Then we swap the coast for the forest and mountains, spotting wildlife and doing some hiking in the lovely Grampians National Park.
An exciting day exploring Australia’s little-known and slowly-disappearing swamplands. Some of the best wildlife spotting on the entire trip amidst gorgeous and secluded surrounds. Oh yeah, and a giant lobster!
A four-day adventure on a highly praised island. One thing we couldn’t seem to find…kangaroos? But plenty of other wildlife was ready to be found, from little penguins to koalas! Splendid and varied landscapes, from beautiful beaches to recovering forests, expansive sand dunes, and some great campsites.
Knocking ourselves out with plentiful wine tasting back on the mainland, followed by some time soaking up civilization in Adelaide before we embark on our great journey across the Nullarbor.
Three days across the empty Nullarbor (which actually only makes up part of the long drive from Port Augusta to Norseman), visiting windy cliffs and sand-entrenched telegraph stations, spotting kangaroos, fun road signs and statues, and driving Australia’s longest stretch of straight road.
Reveling in the spectacular beaches of Esperance and nearby Cape LeGrand National Park, visiting with some adorable kangaroos on the beach, and making the terrifying climb up Frenchmans Peak for some fantastic views.
We find ourselves having to adjust to the insanely small distances between places in southwest WA. Suddenly we are driving 20-30 minutes a day instead of 3-4+ hours. We enjoy being back in a city, some wonderful scenery, trying some gourmet food and wine, and entering into the relief of forested lands.
Exploring the sublime forests of karri, jarrah and other trees, including climbing high at the Tree Top Walk, an unforgettable experience, before heading to Pemberton for some wine tasting. While it’s labeled an up-and-coming wine region, we found we had every winery to ourselves!
Journeying through the Margaret River region, from cape to cape, taking in lighthouses, excellent wines, gourmet cheeses and chocolates, as well as visiting a top-notch brewery, exploring beaches and swamps, and all around enjoying some beautiful scenery complemented by lovely towns.
The last leg of our adventure! With time to spare, we zip up past Perth to Lancelin, taking the newly opened Indian Ocean Drive (now being advertised as a tourist attraction in itself!) to The Pinnacles, a desert filled with strange formations. Then it was back toward Perth, with some time for exploring and relaxing in Swan Valley and Fremantle before setting up new lives in Perth.
